My story
Tarek Kareem Awais Harris. MB ChB MRCPsych DpBus
(Friends call me Awais.)
I am a mental health doctor- a psychiatrist. I am also a Muslim. I have spent my life in the service of others, helping them to be mentally well, to be the best that they can be.
I did my medical training in Oxford and worked in the UK and internationally. I retired, and decided to write a book on how to be mentally healthy from an Islamic perspective. I published it in early 2020.
The pages on this site are here to help give away as much insight into good mental health as possible. I will be adding to this periodically.
My Islamic beliefs
I am at best a faulty and weak muslim. I nonetheless feel OK in my self because I believe Allah has made me as I am to do my best. I do my best at my home, work, and deen, knowing that there is a huge amount to improve. Inshallah, this will come and is a never-ending effort.
I worked in the academic and professional domain for many years, in mental health. I have retired to take on a more public role, because I believe that the issues of mental health are too big to ignore, and there is so much misinformation about mental health that it is time to help put this right.
I am not a final-word authority on matters in Islam, and as such I defer to much more learned people, such as Mufti Menk and Nouman Ali Khan, as great modern voices for us all. I was in the academic and professional fields of mental health: this is where my expertise lies.
My main strength and pursuit is that I have learned, and continue to learn, about how Islam describes and connects with mental health, and it is my mission to bring this knowledge to people in a simple, straightforward way.
Mental health is such a big and pertinent issue. May we all become happy, content, and able to pursue our drams and goals both in Deen and worldly matters. Ameen.
